As soon as the movie began, Horace Grinsby walked quickly to the cafeteria and locked the door. The tall man and the short man stood by the other door keeping guard.

“Okay, get to work,” Grinsby said. “The film only lasts thirty minutes. I think we can get them all.”

The two men put on gloves. The tall man grabbed two shiny ten-speed bicycles. With some difficulty he rolled them toward the door to the outside. The short man opened the door. The tall man pushed the bikes through the door, then up a ramp into the huge tractor-trailer truck. Grinsby was close behind with two more bicycles, a ten-speed and a five-speed dirt bike. The short man propped the door open, then began rolling bicycles into the truck too. They worked quietly but quickly. Grinsby occasionally checked his watch.

“This has to be one of the best heists I’ve ever made,” the short man grunted. “These things are worth a fortune. And they’re nice. A lot of them are new. How many do you suppose there are? A couple hundred?”

The tall man shrugged his shoulders and loaded two blue bikes into the truck. He piled bikes on top of each other to make more room. He had stopped counting how many he had loaded.

Grinsby smiled as he loaded two Goliath Cobras into the truck. He stopped, adjusted his derby, then looked at his watch; they would have time to get every bicycle.

“This will be like Christmas in reverse,” the short man said. “I wish I could be around to see the brats’ faces when they see this empty cafeteria.”

“Just be quick,” Grinsby reminded them. “We only have ten minutes left.”

All three men continued working until the last bicycle was in the truck. A single handgrip with red streamers rested on the floor. Grinsby ran outside, then returned with a long rope.

“Make it look good,” Grinsby said. “But don’t hurt me.”

The short man tied Grinsby’s legs, then his hands. Then he wrapped a blindfold around his eyes.

“Use the handkerchief in my pocket for a gag,” Grinsby said. “Then get going. You know where to wait. And stay there. Don’t get any foolish ideas.”

“Sure, sure,” the short man grunted. He jammed the handkerchief into Grinsby’s mouth. A half minute later, the truck left. Grinsby lay back against the wall quietly, waiting to be discovered. The plan had worked so far.
